Travel tips

Stay healthy during business travel
Being well prepared for a business trip helps prevent health problems. Especially when travelling abroad for work, it is essential that you stay fit and are able to carry out your duties whilst there. KLM Health Services helps you to identify and minimise risks. With practical tips and clear information, you’ll set off well prepared, ensuring you stay healthy and remain fit for work throughout your trip.
Preventive measures prior to leaving
When travelling abroad, you will encounter conditions that differ from what you are used to. Medical prevention is therefore an integral part of your travel preparations. By taking the right precautions in advance, you can significantly reduce the risk of having to cut your assignment short.
Vaccinations and medical advice
The vaccinations you need depend not only on your destination, but also on your job and your personal health. It is best to book your appointment 4 to 6 weeks before departure. This gives the vaccines enough time to take effect and allows you to manage any side effects before your flight. Does your employer work with KLM Health Services? If so, you can contact us for this.
Protection from insects
In many business regions, mosquitoes transmit diseases such as malaria, dengue fever and Zika. Ensure you use sufficient insect repellent with a high DEET content and wear long-sleeved clothing, particularly in the evenings when mosquitoes are most active.
Medication and documentation
Do you take prescription medication? Make sure you have a generous supply in your hand luggage and bring an official medication passport in English. This will prevent delays and queries at customs or with local healthcare providers.
Hygiene whilst travelling
Put together a compact travel first-aid kit containing hand sanitiser, an anti-diarrhoea medicine and ORS. Good hand hygiene remains the most effective way to prevent the spread of infections.
Health risks when travelling
Everyday activities can pose a risk to your health when travelling. Pay particular attention to the points below when visiting your destination.
Food and drinking water
Only drink water from sealed bottles and avoid ice cubes. Stick to the rule: boil it, cook it, peel it or forget it.
Sun and heat
Working in a hot climate is physically demanding. Drink more water than usual and avoid overheating.
Insect and animal bites
Avoid contact with (stray) animals. If you are bitten or scratched, immediate medical attention is required due to the risk of rabies.
Safety at your destination
In addition to health risks, safety risks may also play a role at your destination. View the latest travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for your destination: Travel advice | NetherlandsWorldwide. Only travel if it is safe and in line with your employer’s policy.
