Chikungunya

Chikungunya is a viral infection transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, particularly the yellow fever mosquito and the tiger mosquito. These mosquitoes, which tend to bite mainly during the day, can also spread other viral infections, including dengue and the Zika virus. They are also active in the early morning and during dusk in the evening.

Where is chikungunya found?

The disease occurs in many tropical countries, both in urban areas and rural regions. The virus is particularly prevalent in Africa, Asia, Central and South America, the southern part of North America, the Caribbean, and the countries in and around the Indian Ocean.

What are the symptoms?

  • Sudden high fever
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Skin rash
  • Various eye conditions such as conjunctivitis

How can chikungunya be prevented?

  • Use insect repellent on exposed skin (containing DEET).
  • Wear long-sleeved and light-coloured clothing.
  • Sleep in areas that have airconditioning or insect screens.
  • Use a mosquito net when sleeping in open spaces.
  • Prevent stagnant water around your accommodation.

Since July 2025, a chikungunya vaccine has been available at our Travel Clinics. If you plan to (for an extended period) visit an area where the chikungunya virus is prevalent, you may be eligible for this vaccine.

The vaccination consists of a single shot and likely protects for at least two years. Research into this is ongoing. Keep an eye on this page for the latest information.

Who is not eligible for a vaccination?

  • Children under 12 years old
  • Adults 65 years and older
  • Pregnant women
  • Breastfeeding women
  • People with an immune system disorder

Note: a chikungunya virus vaccination cannot be administered in combination with some other vaccinations (such as yellow fever). Make an appointment at one of our Travel Clinics for personalised advice.
